This private bungalow in an eco resort in Thailand where you can interact with elephants roaming freely around the property and be surrounded by the mountains, a river, and a waterfall, costs $50 a day.
The meals, due to the location, costs more than you get from the city.
A 2-day trip where you can play and bathe the elephants, sleep in the jungle, trek the mountains and experience an authentic Karen hill tribe life costs $150 per person
I got all of it for FREE. I certainly don't have that cash.
As a newbie trying to be a digital nomad and volunteering for the first time, I actually got excited how amazing the place was.
Imagine being surrounded by nature but still you are able to work. Way different from the life I had as an OFW in Qatar.
And the fact that I get all that for free? -- jackpot.
All that made it too easy to forget the reason why I'm there. Volunteering will put you in a totally different box.
How often do you meet people who's background are different from yours?
The eco resort is run by an American who founded an organization helping Burmese refugee women and girls at risk of sex trafficking.
100% of the proceeds are used to fund projects to empower the girls by giving them education, scholarships, workshops and seminars.
I had to leave this amazing place early though because reality hits -- I am working online full time, I needed a steady wifi. I also had to work on my skills to really help these people.
Otherwise, it was a totally different experience. Made skipping touristy Bangkok all worth it.
